Thixotropic Agent / Rheology Modifier

Borchi® Gel NA is a low shear thixotropic additive for water-based paint formulations. This rheology modifier provides improved viscosity stability after tinting with universal colorants in water-based coatings systems.

Borchi® Gel NA thixotropic additive is a VOC-, APEO-, and tin-free organic zirconium complex neutralized with sodium hydroxide. Benefits include highly effective storage stability, as well as the prevention of settling and separation.

Borchi® Gel NA allows for efficient flow and leveling. It can be optimized to create a gel structure that is dosage dependent.

Solid paint based on a styrene acrylic polymer.  Modified hydroxyethyl methyl cellulose (HEMC) is used in combination with 1.5% Borchi® Gel NA

 

This thickening agent does not contain any odor and can be used as a post additive to adjust final viscosity in formulations. The concentration level is important as too high a level can lead to excessive crosslinking, which may cause separation and structure loss.

Applications

Most binders that work with Borchi® Gel NA are for decorative systems and have strong hydroxyl and carboxyl functionality. However, this rheology modifier additive can also work in industrial systems with strong hydroxyl and carboxyl functionality. This solution works well in brush and roller applications.

  • Dosage

    Typical usage levels are 0.5 – 2.0 % as supplied based on the total weight of the formula. In difficult systems it could be necessary to increase the dosage up to 5 % (as supplied) on total formulation. The degree of thixotropy will depend on the type of reactive groups present in the system, the pH of the coating (ideally between 7.5 and 8.5), the level of the desired gel structure and the amount of Borchi® Gel NA used. The exact dosage should be experimentally determined. We recommend adding Borchi® Gel NA at the end of the formula under good mixing conditions to prevent gel seeds from forming and to develop a homogeneous gel structure.

  • Storage

    Protect from the effects of weathering and store at temperatures between 5 and 30 °C. Once opened, containers should be resealed immediately after each removal of the product.
