Anti-Skinning Agent in Paints / Phenol-, Oxime-, and MEKO-Free

Ascinin® Anti Skin 0445 is an anti-skinning agent for paints.  It is a MEKO-, oxime-, and phenol-free solution for water- and solvent-based systems.

Benefits of Anti-Skinning Agents in Paints

Anti-skinning agents in paints like Ascinin® Anti Skin 0445 prevent in-can skin formation from occurring. This solution controls surface dry retardation and keeps the film open longer to ensure deeper penetration of oxygen to lower film layers. This in turn promotes through dry and improves flow properties. Ascinin® Anti Skin 0445 improves storage stability by preventing skin-formation in oxidatively drying coatings on the surface of the coating while still in the container.

MEKO-free solutions help meet MEKO reduction level proposals in Europe, Canada, and other regions without sacrificing performance.

Other MEKO-free options include:

MEKO-Free Anti-Skins and High-Performance Catalysts

Ascinin® Anti Skin 0445 and our other MEKO-free anti-skins are compatible with our high-performance cobalt replacement catalysts. High-performance catalysts include Borchi® OXY-Coat for solvent-based short, medium, and long oil alkyd coatings,  Borchi® Dragon for solvent-based high solids, long oil alkyd coatings, and Borchi® OXY-Coat 1101 for water-based short, medium, and long oil alkyd coatings.

Applications

Applications for Ascinin® Anti Skin 0445 include oxidatively cured coating systems, printing inks, and pigment pastes. This solution works well in systems with alkyd resins.

  • Features

    • Improves the storage stability of water- and solvent-based oxidatively cured coating systems, printing inks and pigment pastes by preventing skin-formation on the surface of the coating while still in the container
    • Controls surface dry retardation and keeps the film open longer to ensure deeper penetration of oxygen to lower film layers which promotes through dry and improves flow properties
    • Can eliminate excessive dry time retardation with phenolics or the toxicity of oximic compounds

  • Applications

    • Polar formulations
    • Clear or pigmented systems

  • Dosage

Ascinin® Anti Skin 0445 can be added to the system at any stage of the manufacturing process but it is highly recommended to add it as the final addition after driers. Pre-dilution is not recommended. The amount of Ascinin® Anti Skin 0445 depends on the type of binder and quantity of the driers used. Typical amounts are 0.2 to 0.6 % by weight on total formulation. When substituting for Butanonoxime we recommend starting with half the original amount and increase as needed.

  • Storage

Protect from the effects of weathering and store at temperatures between 5 and 30 °C. Once opened, containers should be resealed immediately after each removal of the product.

  • Safety

No special labeling is required to meet EEC requirements. Ascinin® Anti Skin 0445 is not considered a dangerous cargo. For further safety information please refer to our safety data sheet.
