Calcium is an auxiliary drier that is used solely in combination with primary and secondary driers.

  • Supply Form

Octa-Soligen® driers are based on metal salts of synthetic carboxylic acids. We supply calcium driers as a neutral or over based version with different metal contents and solvents that meet the specific requirements of various applications:

    Octa-Soligen® Calcium 10, basicsolventborne systems
    Octa-Soligen® Calcium 4, basicsolventborne systems
    Octa-Soligen® Calcium 5, basicsolventborne systems
    Octa-Soligen® Calcium 5, neutralsolventborne systems
    Octa-Soligen® Calcium 7 HS, neutralVOC-reduced and High-Solid coatings

  • Properties

Calcium itself has no drying effect on binders that dry by oxidation. However, it yields synergistic effects in combination with primary driers such as cobalt and manganese and with secondary driers such as zirconium.

When added during grinding, it prevents adsorption of the primary driers at the surface of the pigments, thus stabilizing the drying power. Calcium also promotes pigment wetting and the neutral supply forms improve film gloss.

  • Applications

Octa-Soligen® Calcium is used in solventborne systems based on alkyds and epoxy esters that dry byoxidation.

  • Dosage

In our experience, the percentage addition of calcium, calculated on the metal content relative to solid binder, is approx. 0.03 – 0.30 %. The exact amount required depends on the binder used and should always  be determined in preliminary trials.

It is recommended to add all or part of Octa-Soligen® Calcium during the grinding step to improve pigment wetting. It can also be incorporated at the end of the process at the same time than other driers.

  • Storage

Protect from the effects of weathering and store at temperatures between 5 and 30 °C.

Once opened, containers should be resealed immediately after each removal of the product.

  • Safety

Please refer to our safety data sheet for information relating to product safety.
