Description

Zinc is a secondary drier that improves the through drying and hardness of the paint film. It is always
used in combination with primary driers (Cobalt, Manganese, Borchi® OXY – Coat and Vanadium compounds).

  • Properties

The primary function of Zinc is to keep the paint film “open”. This results in better through drying of quick dry and baking systems and can prevent wrinkling and orange peel on the surface of the paint film. The surface dry time may be increased slightly.

Zinc also improves pigment wetting and dispersion which can increase the gloss and color fastness of coatings. Grinding times can be reduced when Zinc is added to the dispersion. Zinc is almost colorless and will not discolor the paint film.

  • Applications

18% Zinc Ten-Cem® driers are neodecanoate metal salts designed for solventborne coatings only. They are used in all oxidatively cured systems, whether air or force dried. They are used in architectural paints, industrial coatings and stains.

  • Dosage

In conventional alkyd formulations, the Zinc addition is between 0.03 – 0.50 % metal based on the vehicle solids of the coating and will vary depending upon the composition of the binder. The specific drier blend should be experimentally determined. Zinc drier can be added to the dispersion and/or in the letdown with other driers.

  • Storage

Protect from the effects of weathering and store at temperatures below 50 °C. Once opened, containers should be resealed immediately after each use.
